Niyati S., Senior Research Fellow at the Economic Analysis Unit of Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore presented a seminar titled- “Female Labour Absorption in Rice Cultivation: Evidence from Study Villages,” at the office of the Foundation on Tuesday, 14th August 2018.

The study is a part of her ongoing PhD research at ISI Bangalore. In this seminar she explored the patterns of female labour absorption in rice cultivation in India. Her analysis was primarily based on data from seven villages across five States in India, collected by the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (FAS) as part of Project on Agrarian Relations in India (PARI).
Niyati analysed the magnitude of female labour absorption in different operations involved in the cultivation of rice in these villages. She discussed the different forms of labour in which women engage in rice cultivation. She also presented the variations in the gender division of labour in crop operations of rice. The presentation also explored the possible factors which could explain these variations.
As one of the central themes of her presentation, she explained how the emergence of piece rated contracts as an important form of hired labour in crop operations posed a methodological challenge to analyse gender division of labour.
The presentation followed a round of discussion around her research objectives and methodology.
The Foundation wishes her all the best for her doctoral study!
