Abhinav Kapoor, an intern at the Foundation for Agrarian Studies, presented a seminar titled, “Peri-Urban Transformation of Bangalore – A study of spatial expansion and socio-economic change” at the office of the Foundation on Feb 27, 2018. The presentation was based on his MPhil. Research at TISS, Mumbai.

The primary objective of the study was to analyse the transformation of the areas in the periphery of Bangalore, outside the jurisdiction of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), from 1991 to 2011, and to look at the pattern of urbanisation and the subsequent socio-economic changes. Abhinav used GIS to map the study areas with the socio-economic changes undergone in the past three rounds of the Census.

He pointed to the changing nature of workforce in the study areas. The study conclusively shows a shift from agriculture to non-agriculture in the periphery of Bangalore city. Also, evident is the fact that the main workforce declined in these two decades. A stark decline in women workforce is also to be witnessed in this period. At the same time, however, the study shows an increase in female, non-agricultural, employment in the first decade of this century.
